The Progress Report will keep you informed of completed installation of the Butts Only Box
projects and their locations, as well as current and upcoming projects.
We just completed the installation of B.O.B.s at major rest areas in Northern California. As you
might suspect, cigarette litter is a major issue at places like this due to the heavy traffic
associated with them. But with the B.O.B.s in place the cigarette litter will be cut considerably.

Here is a Butts Only Box Roadside model installed at Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point located on the east side of highway 101
as you're leaving San Francisco.
In addition to the Butts Only Box receptacles there is signage that is placed in the vicinity of them to let people know what
their use is for and how they can help keep the area cleaner by disposing of cigarette litter in it's proper place.
On November 1, 2011, the Park Supervisor, Kevin Takei, and I performed an initial scan in
the proposed installation areas. We collected 2,850 cigarette butts in the three proposed
installation areas. The Butts Only Boxes were installed at the designated areas on
November 15, 2011. Six weeks after installation, on December 27, a secondary scan was
conducted by Kevin Takei. I assisted Kevin with tallying the number of cigarette butts
collected in this scan, and I am pleased to report there were 917 cigarette butts collected –
more than a two-thirds reduction in cigarette litter!
